Datura wrightii
Datura wrightii (Moon Flower) is native that is quickly discerned by its large blue/green leaves and its enormous moon white trumpet flower. This plant is popular among gardeners because of its large, beautiful and fragrant flower. The flowers are nocturnal, they open up at night and die the next day at about midday.
The flowers are visited by hummingbird moths and several types of bees including honeybees. If bees are early, they can get a chance to feed from the flower since it dies during the day. It is also a host plant for the hummingbird moth.
Although, the moon flower is now referred to as highly toxic, any Native American tribes honor this plant as a sacred organism of the universe. The plant has been used in ceremony and rituals to enter other dimensions and communicate with other spiritual beings. Some tribes use it to find lost items because it allowed you to “see through” things. However, many tribes admit that it can be highly dangerous as the user can become insane or die. The plant also has medicinal value since it can be applied topically for arthritis and even broken bones.
